Why should I choose Homestay with a Heart™?
I’m not sure about staying with a family I’ve never met. Is it safe?
What’s unique about your homestay families? What’d it be like staying with my homestay family?
What if I run into problems with my homestay family?
Do you have staff that speak my language?
We are a social enterprise registered with Corporations Canada, with the ultimate aim of providing the best cross-cultural experiences for internationals. We are one of the few incorporated homestay agencies in Vancouver.
We believe having a local homestay family and a local buddy are essential to really “becoming local” in a new country. Your homestay experience will let you experience real life in Vancouver through getting to know locals and spending time with them as part of their family.
Homestay with a Heart™ is dedicated to providing the best possible homestay service for your stay in Vancouver. Our hosts are carefully selected and screened to ensure they have a heart for internationals and are committed to treating you as part of their family. Also, we are the only homestay agency in Vancouver that offers a local buddy program. To learn more about us, click here.
Homestay with a Heart™ takes great care in our recruitment and selection of homestay families. All of our potential hosts have to go through a rigorous 6-step screen process before they are able to host. They have to go through two interviews. We visit their homes and interview them there. We also conduct background checks on them. Our hosts need to clearly demonstrate their heart for hospitality and that they are committed to treating you like their own family. If we cannot find enough hosts that meet the above criteria for your requested time period, we’d rather tell you about honestly instead of matching you with under-qualified hosts. In short, we only partner with families that we would would feel comfortable staying with ourselves.
One of our emphasis is for hosts to treat you like their own family. Hence:
– Your homestay fee includes all food (If you choose that option). Your host will likely adopt an open fridge policy where you are allowed to eat most food available in the house. You might have to prepare your own lunch, and/or help prepare other meals, just like you’re part of their family, but you won’t have to worry about not having enough to eat because you’ll be treated as part of the family.
– You’ll be expected to take part in household chores such as helping with cooking and cleaning, just like you’re part of a Canadian family.
– You can join them in some of their weekend and other activities, if you wish.
– Your hosts will be interested in learning about your culture too!
Anytime during your stay, if you encounter any problems, we’d advise you to speak first directly to the person involved. If the conflict is not resolved, you can let us know and we can help guide you to find a solution. Worst comes to worst, if the problem cannot be solved (E.g. you are allergic to your host’s dog), we can find you another host within the first 15 days, at no extra cost.
Yes! We are happy to assist you in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Portuguese.
