What are the benefits of hosting internationals?
What are the requirements of hosting?
Do I need to cook for my guests everyday? I might not have time to cook everyday.
How many students can I host?
What if I run into problems with my students?
There are a number of benefits of hosting internationals. Here’re a few we’ve found from our own experiences of hosting and being guests:
– a new friend
– learning about a new culture
– enhancing your cross-cultural skills and that of your family
– becoming more open to different ideas and ways of thinking
What are the requirements of hosting? You can host internationals in your home if:
– You have at least one furnished spare room/guest room in your home.
– You and your family are excited about meeting people from different cultures.
– You and your family are open about new ways of thinking and acting.
If you choose the option of including food for students, you and/or someone in your family will be expected to cook sometime.
However, because our emphasis is to have students be part of the family – i.e.
they’re encouraged to help with cooking, cleaning, etc. Hence, it
won’t be a one-way street with just the hosts serving the students.
We’ve found that to be a great way for cultural exchanges and
E.g. some students are interested in preparing food from their home
countries for their homestay, if their homestay is fine with them
cooking. I am sure you can work something out for dinner. E.g. you can
do take-out on some evenings, cook more for lunch and save some for
dinner, have some food in the fridge that the student can easily
microwave, and some evenings the student(s) could also cook. Here are just some
ideas. We would be happy to discuss with you more if you’re interested.
That depends on the number of available rooms in your house. Normally we recommend hosts to not host more than 3 students at a time, in order to have time to get to know each student.
We understand there could be potential conflicts and tensions when living together with someone. Hence, we will help you as best as we can during orientation/training before you start to host. If you encounter any problems while hosting, we advise you to speak to them directly. If the conflict is not resolved, please let us know and we can help guide you to find a solution.
